Short CV

  • After having obtained the European baccalaureate at the European School in Brussels, I have studied biology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel, with marine biology as main academics and the subsidiary academics zoology and physical oceanography. In my "Diplom" exam thesis, I have studied the effects of tube-building worms on the near-bottom flow regine.
  • I then worked at the NIOO-CEME Institute in Yerseke (Netherlands) for 6 months in 1997 to set-up and calibrate a newly-built flume channel laboratory within the framework of the EU-project PHASE.
  • My PhD work (2004, Marine Biology dept., University of Rostock) was focused on quantifying the contribution of biogenic structures to the sediment transport in the near-bottom flow of the Mecklenburg Bight. This topic was part of the interdisciplinary research project DYNAS on the parameterisation and modelling of the dynamics of natural and anthropogenic sediment transport, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
  • As a member of the EU infrastructure network BioFlow, which encompasses 20 flume channel laboratories for benthic biological research in Europe, I was in charge of organising and implementing an intercalibration experiment and an international scientific conference held in Rostock in 2003.
  • During my period as a postdoc researcher (2004-2005), I worked with colleagues from Denmark, France and the Netherlands on expanding the topic of my PhD to the interactions of structure-building organisms from various coastal habitats with the near-bottom flow regime. The main tool for these studies was a flume channel, but the results were also supplemented by field data.
  • In 2006, I have joined research on the remobilisation potential of contaminated sediments in France (Centre d'Océanologie de Marseille) and continued the studies on sediment stabilisation effects of intertidal vegetation in co-operation with Dutch colleagues (NIOO).
  • I was involved in the supervision of student resarch project and exam studies, seminars and the advanced laboratory training in marine biology since 1997, and I gave lectures and several oral presentations on biohydrodynamics.

Other stuff

  • L' Albatros

  • The Albatros
    (Denis Gauer, Réunion)

Often, in search of sport, the idle mariners
Capture an albatross, giant bird of the sea,
That languorously follows as fellow traveller
The ship gliding over the vast and bitter deep.

Scarcely has he been laid upon the briny deck
Than this lord of the sky, ungainly and abased,
Will let his great white wings hang piteously down
Like a pair of paddles abandoned at his sides.

This winged voyager, how limp and graceless now!
Grotesque and risible — his beauty now all gone!
One of the tars teases his beak with his clay pipe,
Another, limping, apes the cripple that once flew!

The Poet is akin to the prince of the clouds
    Who dwells in the tempest and scoffs at the archer;
In exile on the earth, mocked by the jeering crowd,
His giant’s mighty wings impede his every step.
